Bandit Queen is a 1994 Indian biographical film based on the life of Phoolan Devi, a woman from a low-caste community who was born into poverty and became a notorious bandit in India during the 1970s and 80s. The film portrays Phoolan Devi's story of survival and struggle against oppression and abuse, including being sold into marriage as a young teenager, facing caste-based discrimination and sexual violence, and ultimately becoming a feared bandit leader who sought revenge against her oppressors.
The film screening will be followed by a discussion with Shubhra Gupta, Film Critic, The Indian Express.
